DPI Demystified

DPI Does Not Change Pixels

Changing DPI only updates a metadata tag. A 1920×1080 image at 72 DPI has exactly the same pixels as the same image at 300 DPI. The difference is only meaningful when printing.

72 DPI Is a Myth

The "72 DPI for screens" rule came from 1984 Macintosh displays. Modern screens range from 100 to 600+ PPI (pixels per inch). Screens ignore DPI metadata entirely — they just show the raw pixels.

Print Resolution Math

At 300 DPI, a standard US Letter page (8.5×11 inches) needs 2550×3300 pixels. That is why a 12MP camera (4000×3000) can just barely fill a full-page print at 300 DPI.
Pro Tip: For professional printing, set DPI to 300. For large banners viewed from a distance, 100-150 DPI is perfectly fine — your eyes cannot resolve fine detail at arm's length on a 3-foot poster.
